At a precise time, Mountainous and Lobed Star Corals explode, releasing millions of eggs and sperm for 20-30 minutes. For those corals, it’s all over for another year. Most of the rest will spawn at the same time the next night, along with many Brain corals and Staghorn corals. Although Ocean Frontiers, working with Dr. Alex Mustard, has successfully predicted the spawning for the past 17 years and bringing guests to witness, it’s no sure thing and will remain a rare and fleeting event – and an amazing experience for divers!
